When Midway released NBA Jam in the arcades in 1993, it became an instant smash hit, as players enjoyed the over-the-top arcade b-ball action. The following year Midway followed up with a sequel called NBA Jam Tournament Edition, an upgrade which gave players more of everything. Much like its predecessor, NBA Jam TE soon hit the major systems, and the Genesis was not left out. This was one of the last of Midway's games Acclaim ported to the home systems, so is it nothin' but net, or does it miss the hoop by a mile? […] Of course the major concern is the gameplay, and NBA Jam TE does not disappoint. This cartridge delivers some great fast arcade action, with power-ups and cheats that really add some new dimensions to the standard game. Not everyone will like the power-ups, and fortunately Acclaim didn't make them mandatory. Those who just want straight b-ball action can use the tournament mode to keep things fair. The computer puts up a good game and never really gets frustrating; usually you'll lose from your own careless mistakes. Some may feel the gameplay is too much like NBA Jam, but while the basic action is the same, the extra features add so much to the already-solid action. The bottom line is while NBA Jam was great, NBA Jam Tournament Edition is better that great. Simply put, this game is an awesome hoops title that keeps what was good about the first game and adds more players, features, modes, and other stuff to make one of the best arcade-style sports games ever. Plus, its four player capabilities mean more sports fans can get in on the action. Even if you already have the original NBA Jam in your collection, you'll definitely want to pick up this excellent follow-up. This is one cart to slam dunk into your Genesis! www.sega-16.com

This game lets you play two-on-two arcade basketball with players from all the NBA teams. Gameplay is fast and action-packed, with special moves including SuperJam power-ups, wild celebrations and deliberately unrealistic jamming. Players are rated out of ten on eight ability categories, from steals and blocks to dunks and 3-pointers. Up to four human players can take part, each always controlling a single player for their team, and AI for other players. This allows for four players to face each other in teams of two, or for two players to team up against a third player with a CPU team-mate. This tournament version of the game adds an extra mode in which you have to defeat all the NBA teams to unlock extra players (2 extra players for almost every team). Once you have completed this, a higher CPU difficulty level is revealed. www.mobygames.com

Arcade-style two-on-two basketball is action is alive and well on the 32x, courtesy of NBA Jam Tournament Edition. This moderately improved sequel to Midway’s incredibly popular NBA Jam came straight from the arcades and was converted to almost every available platform of the era. The original Genesis version of this game is already quite good, retaining most of the action of its arcade parent. The 32x port adds what was missing, including more colors, the oversized heads on the players, the arcade's scaling effect, and generally cleaner graphics and sound (the programmer responsible for the 32x version of NBA JAM T.E. claims that this game pushes the 32x hardware to its limit, but we have trouble believing that.) The scaling effect turns out to be an important addition, bringing the 32x port much closer to the arcade original in terms of gameplay. NBA Jam T.E. shuns the more realistic action of recent basketball titles in favor of fun, over-the-top action. All the arcade’s trademark features are here, including flaming basketballs, completely unrealistic cross-court jumps, the trademark „Boom Shaka Laka!“ voice-overs, and hidden characters galore. Iguana has even added a funky new „baby“ mode featuring tiny characters with huge heads. The Genesis control pad is perfect for this sort of finger-frenzied game, and the control is precise and accurate. Four-player NBA Jam is absolute gaming heaven, and the 32x handles the action without breaking a sweat. The action may not be very realistic, but this is the only basketball title in the 32x library, so you might as well have your fun where you can find it. The 32x port of NBA Jam T.E. sold poorly, probably due to the fact that the Genesis version and its prequel sold millions and gamers were getting tired of it. One of the better 32x games, and worth scouting out. www.the32xmemorial.com
